Kerala Samajam Munich has been successfully bringing together Malayalis in Munich for the past many decades. KSM organises get-togethers and events every year providing a platform for the Malayalis to meet each other and build stronger bonds.
While ensuring that the spirit of Kerala lives on in Munich, KSM has also made sure that the needy back home in Kerala also experience the kindness and care of the Malayali community in Munich.
Flood Relief 2018
When disaster struck Kerala in the form of floods in 2018, Kerala Samajam Munich was quick in providing relief to the affected ones.
Members of Kerala Samajam who were in Kerala arranged relief materials and handed them over to the relief centers. Our members also visited affected areas and helped people get back to normal lives.
KSM then launched a campaign to raise funds for further relief activities. Support came from all corners and in a quick time KSM was able to collect above 10.000 euros from the kind-hearted.
Out of this, an amount of Five Lakh Indian Rupees was donated to the Chief Minister’s relief fund to help in rebuilding the state.
Some of the collected amount was also utilized in rebuilding the computer lab of SNDP Higher Secondary School in Kuttamangalam, Alappuzha. The lab was completely destroyed in the floods and the school did not have a way forward to resume computer labs. KSM procured computers and got them delivered to the school.
Many farmers lost their cattle in the flood thereby severly affecting their livelihood. Through contacts in the Dairy Development Department of the Kerala Government, KSM identified one such case and donated a cow.
One of the major tasks during the rehabilitation phase was clearing the houses of the debris from the flood. There was a severe shortage of high pressure jet pumps used for this purpose. Kärcher, one of the world leaders in manufacturing cleaning equipment donated a high pressure pump to KSM. The Samajam then took care of shipping the equipment to Kerala and through an NGO handed it over to the District Collector of Ernakulam.
The help extended by the Malayali community in Munich was instrumental in the large scale charity operation Kerala Samajam Munich could undertake. Other communities in Munich also chipped in with their share of support.

COVID-19 Relief activities
The global pandemic COVID-19 wreaked havoc across the world in 2020. Kerala took extremely effective measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Schools were closed as part of the lockdown. To continue education, Kerala Government announced classes through the television channel Victor. But this required students to have their own television sets at home. This was difficult for children coming from economically backward families. Kerala Samajam was quick to identify a school in Murikkattukudi in Kattapana where the students are predominantly from the tribal families. KSM then procured 6 32″ Philips LED television sets and got them delivered to the school. The entire effort was co-ordinated through one of the teachers in the school.
